SMILE Youth Group
St. Andrew Parish feels as strongly as you do about
the well being of our young people. They are a gifted, talented,
creative part of our parish. However, they still need encouragement,
support, spiritual guidance and the need to be a part of their
parish community.
Since St. Andrew and St. Elizabeth Ann Seton have a consolidated
elementary school and most of our Junior High and High School
students attend the same public and parochial schools, it
seemed only natural to combine efforts, finances and energy
in one Youth Ministry Program - the SMILE Youth Ministry Program.
SMILE is designed to meet the needs of all Junior High (7th & 8th grades) and High School students. S.M.I.L.E. stands
for Something More In Life Expected. Our challenge is to offer
a process that meets the needs of the total person. SMILE
is based on the seven components of Youth Ministry as designed
in the United States Catholic Conference document - A Vision
of Youth Ministry, as follows:
Social - activities that offer a
safe and fun-filled environment (dances, ski trips, whitewater rafting,
etc.).
Understanding and Healing - Junior
High and High School Youth Group meetings with topics that relate
to teens (i.e. peer pressure, self-esteem, etc.).
Catechesis - growing in our relationship
with God and knowledge of our faith. Our high school Sunday night
meetings take the place of high school CCD for both parishes.
Community - sense of belonging to
the group/parish -Support system for teens.
Enablement - enabling teens to take
a leadership role in SMILE (peer ministry).
Service - service projects such as
visits to the nursing home and Soup kitchen, Encouraging teens to
minister within parish life (letters, communion ministers, choir,
etc.).
Spiritual - Spring Retreat (Freshmen
- Seniors), Kairos Retreat (Sophomores, Juniors and Seniors) prayer
time at all meetings.
Our SMILE process begins in Junior High (7th & 8th grade) with
meetings and social activities. Our eighth graders are invited to
join the Confirmation Process, which is based on community building,
knowledge about the Catholic faith and growing in their relationship
with God.
